History of Floyd’s Pub

Floyd’s was opened in 1991, after the $5.8 million restoration project undergone by the Windsor. The pub was named after employee Floyd Lowery, who passed away long before the hotel reopened its doors in 1991. The name of the employee was Floyd’s Lowery and he was a bellman and elevator operator for the Windsor Hotel. Many people still remember Floyd when the Windsor operated as a hotel as being a man who never took a drink. It is therefore ironic that it is the Windsor pub that bares his name.

The idea of naming the pub after Floyd Lowery came up at the time of the restoration of the Windsor, when the hotel was being prepared to reopen its doors after almost 20 years closed. On that occasion a group of engineers working in the grounds of the so run-down building found an old safe behind the old front desk. Thrilled by the fact that a safe had been found, the engineers were eager to open the box. When they finally opened the safe, to their surprise, they did not find a treasure or money, but instead, they found Floyd’s Lowery worn-out uniform. And to honor Floyd’s for his 40 year of hard work, the group in charge of the restoration named the pub after him. Little did they know that Floyd’s had never taken a drink.

Floyd’s Pub also has an adjacent verandah from where, in February of 1928; the Governor of New York and soon-to-be President Franklin D. Roosevelt, gave a speech to the Americus Chamber of Commerce members. Roosevelt was a guest of the Windsor Hotel. Today, the verandah still exists and guests can relax in the wicker rockers while sipping their favorite beverage. Floyd’s Pub is still open today, and a nice crowd gathers at the pub for happy hours on weekdays and for Trivia Nights on Wednesdays. In the summer, the adjacent verandah becomes the perfect place for private dinners and receptions.
