The Windsor Hotel was established in 1892
as a destination for northern hunters and vacationers escaping the cold
winters. The castle-like Victorian style structure represents an eclectic
mix of architectural elements, and it is a true gem of the American
history. Originally a 100-room, five story Victorian hotel complete with turrets, balconies,
and a three story open atrium lobby, the Windsor was the site of numerous
balls and celebrations. Countless illustrious guests graced the Windsor’s
halls, such as former U.S. presidents, writers and businesspeople. Over
the course of decades, many important decisions, meetings and speeches
took place at the Windsor, therefore giving the hotel a unique spot in the
American history.
Among the many interesting
facts that shape the history of the hotel, the rumor that John Dillinger
or Al Capone spent the night in the Bridal Suite with an armed bodyguard
posted at the foot of the stairs is perhaps the most appealing one. Other
illustrious guests that spent the night at the Windsor are 39th
U.S. president Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn. The hotel’s
Presidential Suite was named in honor of President Carter. Also, the
Roosevelt Boardroom is called the "Lucky Room" because it was the
headquarters for many successful local political campaigns. Franklin D.
Roosevelt made a speech to the Chamber of Commerce from the adjoining
balcony when he was Governor of New York in February 1928. It has also
been used for sequestered juries and ball teams too, such as the old
Georgia/Florida baseball league. To learn more about the history of the
Windsor, visit the hotel’s website

Today, the Windsor has 53 rooms and occupies an entire city block.
Because it so splendidly represents the history of the United States, the
Windsor is one of the main attractions to thousands of visitors that come
to southwest Georgia every year. The Windsor is not only a hotel but also
a landmark of the olden times.
The Windsor is also a
perfect place for Weddings and anniversaries. The hotel’s
three-tier atrium lobby made of polished
golden oak and marble offers a wonderful set for weddings ceremonies. The
Windsor also has four different banquet rooms in different sizes that can
hold total of 300 people. The banquet rooms are used for weddings,
anniversaries, rehearsal dinners and other celebrations. All of the
banquet rooms are decorated in Victorian style, from the wallpaper to the
carpets and ceilings. A modern day amenity present in every banquet room
is high speed internet service.
The Windsor Grand Dining Room is also a great
place for weddings and receptions. It offers the splendor of the olden
times with its original marble floor and reproduction period furnishings.
During wedding ceremonies, guests can delight in the light streaming in
from the bay windows and the sound of music from the Grand Piano. The
beautiful Windsor verandah offers an opportunity to sit in wicker rockers
and remember a time long past.
But perhaps is the Bridal Suite the most
appealing place to celebrate anniversaries, honeymoons and romantic
getaways. A private staircase
leads to the Bridal Suite, which features a custom made demi-canopied king
bed, as well as furniture, furnishings, linens and wall coverings that are
reproductions based on color and patterns from the Victorian era. The room
is also equipped with modern amenities: sprinkler system, television with
premium channels, coffee maker and high speed internet service. The suite
has accommodated various famous and infamous guests. Rumor has it that
John Dillinger or Al Capone spent the night in the Suite with an armed
bodyguard posted at the foot of the stairs
To make a special
occasion in the Bridal Suite even more unique, the Windsor offers optional
special touches such as a rose petal path up the stairs and to the bed,
goblets and a bottle of champagne. The Hotel also offers the Romantic
Getaway Package, which is a very popular package among couples celebrating
anniversaries, and includes 1 night in the Bridal Suite or any of the
Windsor rooms, dinner for two in the award-winning Grand Dining Room, a
bottle of champagne and roses.
In addition to the Bridal Suite, the Windsor
has a presidential suite and 51 other period rooms and suites, each of
them different in style and layout, authentically restored with period
wall paper, colors and fabrics. All guestrooms are equipped with high
speed internet service, and so are the banquet rooms and Floyd’s Pub.
The Windsor has had several different
weddings ceremonies and anniversaries celebrated in its premises over the
years. Oftentimes, marriage proposals are made at the Windsor, and couples
return years later to the place where everything started, to celebrate
their anniversary. The Windsor Verandah has been the site of romantic
private dinners, and a place where several marriage proposals were made –
and some accepted. Upon request, the Windsor dining room manager sets up
candelabras, soft music and creates a romantic and relaxing ambiance for
couples proposing or renewing their vows.
The Windsor has just started its second
restoration process under the management of the Patel Family. We hope to
keep the Windsor open for many years or centuries to come, so that the
hotel can still be a place of special memories for the next generations.
